Q: Can I play a book character/relative of a book character/etc.?
A: No. No exceptions.
Q: How do the students get to Hogwarts?
A: Floo Powder – trains don’t exist at this point in history, clearly, so wizards were forced to find alternate means of transportation. Pureblooded and half-blooded witches and wizards all received access to Floo Powder in their letter; it came in a little pouch, enough for one or two trips to Hogsmeade and back. On September 1st each year, several fireplaces were hooked up to the Floo Network and students can get to Hogsmeade, where they are then taken up to Hogwarts. If the student is muggle-born, however, they reach Hogwarts through an alternative method. Students are each given a location close to their house when a specially trained witch or wizard delivers the news of their acceptance to Hogwarts, and they are transported to Diagon Alley, where they can pick up their school supplies. From there, they use Floo Powder to get to Hogsmeade and are then taken up to the school.
Q: What year does this take place?
A: The current term is 1294 – 1295.
Q: Are there limits on the number of characters in each year and house?
A: Yes; three girls and three boys in each year in each house. This is to promote an even spread of characters in age across the Houses (since I've noticed that everyone wants to play a fifth, sixth, or seventh year). However, as the number of characters on the board increases, this number will also increase, just to make things fair.
Q: Can I sort my own character?
A: Nope. Either myself or one of the admin are going to sort your character – sorry! That’s to create a more realistic atmosphere, and stop hundreds of Gryffindors and Slytherins from popping up everywhere.
Q: Can I have special powers/be animagi/metamorphmagus/etc.?
A: No, not without special permission. If you’d like to have one of the above abilities, you’ve got to be a player here already, and have to have proven yourself. These abilities are rare, and as such most characters will not be able to have them, simple as that.
Q: Do I have to stick to every single detail of this era?
A: Well, I’d like for you to, but I’m not going to ask the impossible. You don’t need to do extensive research or the like; just keep it within realistic limits. If it’s clearly not from the era, I’m going to call you on it, sorry.
Q: Can I have a student that doesn't attend Hogwarts, but rather Beauxbatons or Durmstrang?
A: Yes, but only if you are a player here first. These characters will really only be playable once every three terms, because that's when the Triwizard Tournament is held, so they aren't full time characters. Just use the "Other" Application format.
Q: Are there OWLs and NEWTs?
A: Technically, no. However, each class does have it's final examination, and there are 'major' tests in fourth year and in seventh year. The tests in fourth year mark the student's 'halfway' point, and are called just that: "Halfway Tests". They are in all subjects, and are graded by witches and/or wizards who represent the Wizard's Council (essentially, the Ministry of Magic of the day). The finals in seventh year are also quite major, and determine whether or not the student will graduate seventh year (or have to do an eighth year at Hogwarts - rare, but it's happened!) and whether or not they will be able to get the training for the profession of their choice. These are simply called the 'Final Exams', and are again graded by Council witches and wizards.
More questions will be added as I think of them! If you’ve got a question, don’t hesitate to ask me via private message or in the Questions and Suggestions forum!
