Waiting for a Miracle ((Open to Anyone!!)) « Thread Started on Jul 20, 2005, 9:46pm »
Sabine stomped her foot in frustration, a bad move on her part, for her foot caught in her skirts. Losing her balance, she fell to the floor, facedown. “Argh!” she muttered, face red from exertion and now embarrassment of her spectacularly clumsy feat. Sitting up, she glared menacingly at the quill she had placed upon the stone floor in front of her. For the past two hours, she had struggled to place an effective engorgement charm on the quill, but only succeeding to somehow make it turn slightly purple.
Scowling, she pulled her spell book towards her, and read over the directions yet again. “Wou’d h’elp eef thees book were een Spaneesh.” She muttered angrily to herself, as she struggled through the text. Grimacing, she stood back up and squarely faced the quill with a particularly stubborn set to her face. Pointing her wand directly at the quill she again said the incantation. Slowly, the quill swelled to twice its size… before deflating back to smaller its original area.
Sabine shrieked like a banshee, swearing heatedly in Spanish for a good five minutes. After her rant, she dropped wearily to he floor, dejected and close to tears. It’d be so much easier if only she spoke better English. Three years of the language was hardly enough. There were still words she did not understand that were printed in her books. If only she could have stayed in Spain. Quickly she shook the thought from her head. She was loads better off in England, free to speak her mind, go where she pleased, worship her God. She’d be dead if she stayed in Spain.
Sighing heavily, she stared at the stubborn quill, tears beginning to roll down her cheeks. It’d take a miracle to learn this spell by tomorrow’s lesson.

Linton hated patrols.
That wasn't quite true, of course; normally he didn't mind patrols, if only because it was an excuse to get some more homework done, though that was only the case during night patrols. However, during the day, it was impossible to get anything done except patrol; the hallways were fairly crowded, since it wasn't past curfew yet. Thus far he'd stopped three boys from putting a slippery sort of spell on the floors, two girls from practicing their spells in the hall way (on some other year mates), and directed three lost first years to the library. God, but he hated the first few weeks of classes.
Despite all this, however, Linton wasn't really in a bad mood. He had been a prefect for over a year, and had more important things to think about - quidditch, dueling, school... Ceallach, his war horse, was also on his mind, simply because he was in love with the animal. Even if Philip had given it to him - it was impossible not to love Ceallach. He was beautiful. Linton smiled a bit at the thought, and turned a corner just in time to hear -
- was that a scream? He took a few steps forward before he realized that it wasn't a scream, but rather a frustrated shriek. Blinking in confusion, he frowned and glared at a couple of second years, who were staring at a slightly open classroom door in ill-concealed shock. That expression sent them running, and he approached the door with the same frown still on his face. Pushing it open slightly, he leaned against the doorframe and watched the Hufflepuff girl, a third year or so, shriek and scream in a language that wasn't English. Normally Linton wouldn't have spared a second thought, just because she was a Hufflepuff, but a slight twinge of guild prevented him from interupting her rant. Finally she sat down, and from his angle he could see tears roll down her cheeks. He, however, had stood in silence so the chances of the girl noticing him were slim to none.
The sight of tears wasn't something that tugged on Linton's figurative heartstrings. It wasn't that he didn't care for other people, but it was mostly because he wasn't sure how to react to that. He was male, and it was almost always women doing the crying - and they might as well have been another species entirely. Considering he was a stablehand, the only contact with women he'd had in his youth had been with the ladies he'd taken horses from, and that was hardly contact. He also wasn't a fan of children, though he supposed that third years were starting to get a little old to be referred to as 'children'. After a few brief moments of deliberation, Linton knocked on the door.
"Need some help?" He was a prefect, so he supposed he was supposed to be a role model, and that involved helping younger students. Damn; he was getting sick of this prefect stuff.

Sabine hiccupped loudly, and slowly collected her quill and her book, sliding them rather weakly into her bag. She stood up, head hanging in self-shame.
<I>“Need some help?"</I>
Sabine Jumped and whirled around, wand drawn and pointed at the person who stood blocking the doorway. Seeing it was a prefect, she hastily withdrew her wand and stowed it in her bag. Using the sleeve of her robes, she wiped the traces of tears from her face. She looked up at the boy, who was a good head taller than she. “H’elp?” she asked warily. For even though a prefect he was, he was a Slytherin. Why would a Slytherin want to help a Hufflepuff?
She sighed. She was tired. And yes, she did need help. Perhaps the Slytherins weren’t an entirely bad bunch. “Si, I need h’elp.”

Linton nearly reached for his own wand when the girl whirled around with hers pulled out, but didn't quite yet. He trusted his own reflexes to dodge anything the threw in his direction, but he wasn't willing to under-estimate her, or assume that she was going to attempt to hurt him at all. After all, she was a Hufflepuff and Linton couldn't help but think of the house a tad disdainfully - they always seemed so... peace loving. Linton was many things, but he was hardly peace loving. He didn't seek out war or fights, but he hardly avoided it either. In his mind, he did what was needed to come out on the top. That seemed very un-Hufflepuff-ish. Prefect. He reminded himself as the girl put her wand away quickly. Be nice.
“H’elp?”
Linton blinked at her accent. What sort of accent was that? He was from Ireland, so he'd technically been out of England, but he'd never been to a place where people didn't speak English. At first he wasn't sure if he even understood her, but after a few moments he decided that yes, she'd said 'help?'.
"That's what I said," He agreed, trying not to sound irritable. He shifted slightly, leaning on the doorframe and keeping his arms crossed over his chest, lifting his eyebrow ever so slightly. He did look arrogant, and a little irritated, but there was still a slight smile on his face so he could have appeared approachable as well. He was making a concious effort to be nice - it wasn't impossible for him, of course, and when he wasn't in a bad mood he was a nice enough person. That conversation he'd had with Sophie had been proof enough of that - and she was a Gryffindor! If he could talk with a Gryffindor his age, he could talk with a younger Hufflepuff.
“Si, I need h’elp.”
"Alright," Linton straightened up, and took half a step into the room. He wasn't quite sure what 'si' meant, exactly, though he assumed it meant 'yes'. From her tone, that was what it meant anyway, and Linton decided that that was what he would go with. "What with?" Mentally cringing, he ammended the question. "It sounded like you were having a difficult time - with a spell, maybe?" He hadn't seen anything to indicate that, but he was good at guessing. Hopefully he was right.

Julia's day had been average, as with most her days. She was not harressed by boys, or gossiped about by other girls, and she had managed to get down all the notes she need for each class she'd had that day. The only downer on the day was when she remembered her mum; seeing a girl walking around wearing the same dress that her mother used to wear to work made her feel wretched. Remembering her mum was something that always shot pain through Julia's heart; she missed her so.
fter seeing the girl, Julia had scurried as fast as she could to the library to pick up a book. She always read books when she wanted to forget, she prefered living in a fantasy world rather than in reality.
Walking along with a book in hand towards the common room, Julia looked up and saw an older Slytherin boy and a younger Hufflepuff girl conversing and curiosity overrided her natural instinct to just keep walking. The girl stuffed a book and quill into her bag before saying more to the boy. Julia's dark eyebrows furrowed as she neared them, a cautious scowl on her pale face as she finally reach the two of them. Her eyes swept the scene quickly, taking in as much detail as possible before proceeding to speak.
"What's happened here?" Julia asked curiously, trying not to seem too nosy.

<i>"What's happened here?"</i>
Sabine looked past the Slytherin boy to see a ravenclaw girl standing in the doorway. Was her scream really that loud that everyone had heard it? Goodness. They must have thought a banshee had gotten into the school with the ruckus she had caused.
"It's just I can't get this engorgement spell!!" Sabine muttered, frustration encripting each syllable. She didn't like all of this attention. It reminded her too much of the Inquisitions.

The girl still hadn't answered when Linton heard movement behind him, and he turned slightly so that he could see both the newcomer and the Hufflepuff girl. Good Lord, this was a tad ridiculous - he wasn't really the helping type of person in the first place, and now with two students there he was going to start ruining his reputation as a Slytherin. Of course, said reputation wasn't especially large anyway - Linton could have been considered anti-social, though the real reality of the situation was just that he was very, very busy and didn't really have time for much socializing. Between being a prefect, dueling, and quidditch, he was swamped, and now he had to care for Ceallach too - not that he minded the latter. He could use his horse as an excuse to see Sophie again, which was something he wanted to do, though he didn't think he'd ever admit it. She was, after all, a Gryffindor. He seemed to forget that when he was around her though, and it was nice...
"What's happened here?"
"Good question." Linton grumbled softly, though what he really wanted to say was 'nothing yet' in a rather mullish tone. He didn't, however, and surveyed the Ravenclaw girl instead. He thought he recognized her - he probably did, because she was a Prefect too. Blackthorne.... Julia. Yes; he was reasonably sure that was it.
"It's just I can't get this engorgement spell!!"
"Engorgio?" Linton said, feeling rather stupid a moment after the word left his mouth. Of course it was Engorgio! Tilting his head to one side, he asked, "Why don't you show us what you're doing - maybe I'll be able to see what's going wrong." Hopefully that didn't sound to arrogant, nor too nice. He didn't want to be labeled as either; he much prefered being known as good at everything, or something like that.

<I>"Good question."</I>
Sabine narrowed her eyes slightly. She wasn’t much accustomed to the mannerisms of the English people, but quite frankly, that remark sounded derogatory! She really could’ve cared less if they were going to help her or not, but if they weren’t going to, why didn’t they just leave her in peace? As she opened her mouth to let her Spanish pride and temper take over, the boy let out a rather surprised sounding reply.
<I>"Engorgio? Why don't you show us what you're doing - maybe I'll be able to see what's going wrong."</I>
She guessed she should be thankful that the boy was actually going to help her out, and pointing out mistakes, as annoying as that was, really always turned out to be the best way to learn. Sabine nodded and placed the slightly purple quill on the nearest desk and pulled out her wand once again. Holding it firmly, she gave it a little twick and said clearly “Engorgio!” The quill hardly even changed. Turning to the perfects, she looked at them both in turn squarely in the eye.
“Well? W’hat is it dat I am doing wrong?” she asked, not meaning to come off gruff. But she had been wailing for a bit there, so hopefully it was understandable to the others why her voice was a tinge edgy.
