The day was absolutely breathtaking. The sun was progressing in the azure sky, and a light breeze was coming in from the east, gently stirring the shrubbery and bright flowers that grew in abundance in the castle gardens. Sabine strolled slowly through the greenery, humming some ancient Spanish lullaby, gently brushing the soft petals of a blood red rose she held with her long fingers. The skirts of her golden hued dress swayed back and forth as she meandered silently down the grassy paths, her black robes, proudly bearing the insignia of Hufflepuff house, billowing out about her small frame ever so slightly. Her bright eyes picked up the motion of a small, golden bird, flitting about the bright hibiscus blooms. “Ay mi!” she gasped, a delighted smile tugging at her lips, “A snidget!” Keeping her eyes on the bird, she slowly approached it, being careful not to startle the small animal. So enraptured by the quick bird she was, she entirely didn’t see the other human crouching quietly in the brush, also watching the bird. But that was soon to change.

“Oof!” Sabine grunted as she hit the ground face first, a tangle of limbs and petticoats. Hastily restoring herself to standing position, Sabine rushed back to the girl she had tripped over. The snidget, startled, whizzed off faster than lightening. “Oh! Senorita! Lo siento, I deed no’ see you d’ere!” Sabine helped the girl to her feet, a worried look on her face. “I h’ope I deed not h’urt you, senorita! Har you ok?”

Rhona tried to breathe as quietly and softly as possible. She couldn’t believe her good luck. After classes, Rhona had come out to read in the garden before dinner and get in a little personal time. She had curled up on a bench and quickly engrossed herself in “Light and Dark: The Autobiography of Katriona MacKenzie, Auror.” It was a perfectly fascinating book, about the preparation Katriona undertook before auror training, what auror training was like, and what life as an auror was like. As it was, Katriona MacKenzie had been killed on a mission pursuing a dark wizard and had in fact written her autobiography posthumously. Her ghost said that until her body was found she would remain in the mortal plane, guiding the auror trainees that sought her out. At the very end of the book there was an extremely cryptic riddle that Rhona had only partially puzzled out, which indicated the location of Katriona’s ghost.

Well, Rhona had been engrossed in the book, until she noticed a slight of movement in the corner of her eye, a small flash of gold... Could it be? Rhona carefully turned her head in the direction of the flash and caught her breath, a Golden Snidget. Silently shutting the book, Rhona placed it on the bench and carefully got to her feet. She didn’t stand up all the way as she didn’t want to frighten the tiny bird off. For a few minutes she crept softly after the bird, observing its movements and activities. It seemed to be looking for a particular flower, as it would bob at first one plant, then another, unsatisfied. When the small bird finally settled around a clump of hibiscus bushes, Rhona grinned. So Snidgets liked hibiscus nectar, interesting. Crouching down to better obscure herself from the bird’s vision, Rhona tried to breathe as quietly and softly as possible.

And then someone ran into her. Going down in a snarl of skirts and limbs, Rhona cursed lustily in her Scottish brogue as she caught sight of the Snidget zooming off, startled by the sudden noise. Drat.

“Oh! Senorita! Lo siento, I deed no’ see you d’ere!”

“Evidently not.”

The tone was crisp, but not overly sharp. Taking the offered hand, Rhona climbed back to her feet. A firm brushing was then applied to her dark scarlet skirts. In the few seconds she’d been on the ground, the linen had managed to accumulate quite a bit of dirt. Straightening her bodice, Rhona turned to face the girl that had rammed into her. Hmmm, Hufflepuff from the colors, and younger, perhaps third year.

“I h’ope I deed not h’urt you, senorita! Har you ok?”

Goodness, the girl had an atrocious accent! Where in the world was she from? Certainly not from anywhere in the Isles. For if it weren’t for the accent, Rhona would say the girl could have possibly been from any of the Isles.

“Ah’m braw, ah’m braw. Jus’ a wee bit o’ dirt ‘ere an’ thaur, nocht a Cleanin’ Charm winna tak awa.”

With that, Rhona brushed her hair back over her shoulders and took up her “Head Girl Stance”: standing straight, shoulders back, hands clasped behind back, chin up, and looking slightly down her nose. The last bit wasn’t too hard since Rhona was taller than the other girl, but she had to make sure not to over do it.

“Noo, whaur were ye gaun in sooch a ‘urry?”

((^_^ hehe, used THIS for Rhona’s brogue))

((Bwahaha! I luff it! Can’t seem to find a Spanish Phonetics page like that, but hec, three years of the language should have taught me something!))

"Evidently not.”

Sabine was taken a-back by the slight edge of the girl’s voice. She honestly had not meant to smash into the obviously older girl. Shaking her head quickly, she dismissed the girl’s reaction all together. True, the ‘ingles’ had not the manners of the Spaniards, as far as Sabine was concerned, but she could understand the girl’s disturbance. She noticed the girl’s eyes darting over her swiftly, probably to pin which house she was in. Sabine looked the girl over in turn, noticing the badge of a Gryffindor Head Girl. Ahh… well, at least the girl was a Gryffindor, as opposed to a Slytherin. Sabine smirked as she recollected her last run in with a Slytherin. The boy had taunted her mercilessly about her thick accent, calling her all sorts of names… right up until Sabine jumped him. She received detention for that action, but it was well worth it to see the look on the nasty boy’s face.

“Ah’m braw, ah’m braw. Jus’ a wee bit o’ dirt ‘ere an’ thaur, nocht a Cleanin’ Charm winna tak awa.”

Sabine looked at the girl quizzically. She had no idea what had just come out of the girl’s mouth! Realizing that her mouth had dropped a bit, she regained her composure. She smiled and nodded, that being the only thing she could think to do.

“Noo, whaur were ye gaun in sooch a ‘urry?”

Sabine noticed the changing stance of the girl, and drew herself up as well, not one to be intimidated by this pasty ingles lot.

“Eef you cou’d kyn’le say dat a’gin, Hie wou’d be pleesed to han’ser you.” Sabine returned softly, staring back at the girl.

Ah, the girl drew herself up a little. Good, she had some backbone. If there was one thing Rhona despised about a decent portion of the female population of Hogwarts, it was that they were simpering and weak hearted, trained to defer to males and other superiors. Evidently this little Hufflepuff had missed out on those lessons. Why was she in Hufflepuff and not Rhona’s own Gryffindor then? Oh well, if there was anything to say about the Hufflepuffs they were the most loyal and hard working people anywhere. Loyalty alone could give a person backbone.

“Eef you cou’d kyn’le say dat a’gin, Hie wou’d be pleesed to han’ser you.”

What in Merlin’s name was this girl saying? Rhona managed to keep her confusion off her own face, something the little Hufflepuff had failed on a minute before. Ok, this was going nowhere. Better to start from the top then. Rhona lowered her Head Girl stance a bit until she was more relaxed. She folded her hands at her waist and allowed a wry smile to tug at her lips.

“Ah can see we’re no’ gaun ta get onywhaur wi’ this.”

She held out her hand.

“Ah’m Rhona Fraser.”

((wahhhh... it's short! *wibbers*))

Sabine thingyed her head to the side. She still had no idea what the girl was saying. This could take a bit of effort to communicate anything. Sabine nodded again, and turned her body slightly as if to leave. Just as she was about to give a Nice to meet you, have a nice day, the girl stuck out her hand.

“Ah’m Rhona Fraser.”

Ok, that Sabine understood. Taking her cue from Rhona, Sabine eased her stance as well. Reaching out, she grasped Rhona’s hand in a firm handshake, crushing the other girl’s hand in her own, unintentially of course. Sabine, having grown up among mostly men, had developed a very strong handshake, among other strong characteristics. But even the women in her familia were thick-skinned.

“Sabine Girana Cordoza-Vives” she said, Spanish pride glowing from every pore, “Mucho gusto.” Sabine closed her eyes momentarily, shaking her head, then opened her eyes and smiled, “Lo siento, I forget. Pleesed to meet you… Rrhona Frahser” she offered, rolling her r’s luxuriously.

“Whare h’are you from exactly?” she asked after a moment’s thought, “Forgeeve me, but your h’accent is unlike anything I’ve ever h’eard.”
