She smelt of pond weed, she was covered in pond weed and she was soaked to the bone. Beatrix Sheridan felt like she was having one of the worst days of her life.
Beatrix woke up that fresh Friday morning, feeling extremely perky; probably because she had a free period; and she had decided to take a trip to the lake. She often went there when she needed time to reflect on the weeks events, not that there were many, and think about how she was going to go about getting all her work done for her lessons. It also gave her time to think about pranks she might pull, and give her time to plan ahead.
She had just been sitting on a rock next to the school lake, minding her her own business when she felt two firm hands shove her into the freezing cold water. Too busy floundering and being dragged under by her heavy skirts, she hadn't seen who had shoved her in; but now she was incensed and was determined to find out who the perpetrator. Her eyes were narrow slits and her eyebrows were knitted together tightly.
As she walked down the corridors she left small puddles of water behind her, while other students who walked past her turned and sblack personed at; she simply threw them a dirty look before continuing along, heading towards the Gryffindor common room. She raised her hands up to her head and tried to wring the water out of her drenched hair before smoothing down her skirts and trying to look presentable; but it didn't seem to work, she still look like she'd been swimming.
She heard another suppressed giggle from behind her and finally Bea snapped. She whirled around at who had laughed at her, her green eyes ablaze and her jaw set in fury.

Mael Collier was about the furthest from being covered in pond weed as one could get. Immaculately groomed, as always, his hair was stylishly ruffled atop his head, a smile upon his face, and the dress code, as always, completely ignored. Rather than submit to petty rules and wear a tunic in his house color, he had gone for a smokey gray variety that suited him well. It did serve to get him a few odd looks, though, and some of the first years speculated in odd whispers the possibilities of him getting a detention for his blatant disregard of the rules. The other years, however, knew well enough by this time that the Head Boy was rarely seen following rules, and usually got away with it perfectly.
Today was no exception. He was particularly proud of himself for having caught a few fourth years planning on setting off dungbombs in the east corridor where, incidentally, he was going to have to patrol later that night. They would have to learn better than to pollute any area he might walk in, and he had told them as much as he sent them scrambling off to the first teacher they came across for a detention. He had, however, given them all pats on the back and tips on how to better conceal their plans. They didn't mind the detentions so much with their newfound knowledge, of course. He had also graciously (in his opinion) signed the corner of a first year Hufflepuff's homework sheet when she had asked him to.
He had thought the day had been well enough, but as he turned the corner of the corridor, it got even better. It appeared he was going to have plenty of amusement, as well. A girl that seemed to be a couple years younger than himself, and a Gryffindor, at that, was walking down the hallway positively covered in what appeared to be pond muck - it also smelt as such. She looked slightly unnerved, but his suspicions that she was not in the best of moods was confirmed when she turned on a giggling second year that had, apparently, aroused her anger.
Of course, Mael wanted nothing more than to be in on the fun. He sauntered up to the scene, wondering if the Gryffindor was actually going to pounce on the small Ravenclaw, who now looked positively terrified. It would be good sport if she did, he decided.
"Now, now, ladies," he piped up merrily, unable to help his amusement, "What have we got here, eh?" He pretended to look between the two calculatingly. "The dreaded Pond Monster of Hogwarts and it's victim, it seems." He patted the small Ravenclaw reassuringly. "Not to worry, darling, your hero is here. Run along to your dorm before she eats you, now."
The girl threw Mael a look of gratitude before scurrying down the hall, not daring to disobey his orders or risk any more of Beatrix's wrath. Unaware of the danger he was potentially putting himself in, Mael turned a charmingly teasing smirk on Beatrix.
"It's a funny thing," he commented brightly, "Usually, when one goes swimming, they make a habit not to roll around on the bottom of the pond. You, however..." he paused, reaching out to pick a strand of weed from her hair "...appear to stray from the norm."
Of course, years of practice in teasing girls had led him to believe that they were sometimes more to be feared than the creatures in the Forbidden Forest. He had learned, probably sometime during his first year, that they were highly unpredictable, and one could never be too ready to reach for their wand when in the presence of an agitated specimen. Thus, he waited not completely without caution, though he was doubtful of any damage she could do to him.

As Beatrix whirled around and saw the second year she very nearly almost reached out and throttled the girl if she had the chance, she could positively feel her arms stretching out to grab hold of her neck before realizing that she should use her wand. However, she neither had the time nor the patience to look for her wand, and so she would simply have to use her hands. Fortunately for the Ravenclaw girl, an older Slytherin boy was near by.
"Now, now, ladies," he piped up merrily, unable to help his amusement, "What have we got here, eh?" He pretended to look between the two calculatingly. "The dreaded Pond Monster of Hogwarts and its victim, it seems." He patted the small Ravenclaw reassuringly. "Not to worry, darling, your hero is here. Run along to your dorm before she eats you, now.”
Bea’s eyes flashed with fury, and she stared at the seventh year with a look of pure hatred. Bloody Slytherins she muttered as she realized he was Head Boy, Think they’re all that. Whilst thinking that Bea started fiddling around with her skirts trying to find her wand. It was then that an idea struck her to use a cleaning spell. In her anger, Bea had totally forgotten the spell her mother had created and taught her; but now she was going to use it for the first time her life. She nearly banged her head on a nearby wall with how stupidly forgetful she had been,
Just then, Bea saw the boy turn on her with a smirk and she had to resist the temptation to turn the wand on him, fury was bubbling up in her like a volcano and she thought she would explode. She decided not to though, and thought better of it; that was until he said to her brightly:
"It's a funny thing," he commented brightly, "Usually, when one goes swimming, they make a habit not to roll around on the bottom of the pond. You, however..." he paused, reaching out to pick a strand of weed from her hair "...appear to stray from the norm."
She slapped his hand away with a quite unnecessary force, feeling quite irritated that he felt he had the right to touch her. With that she brought her wand out, pointing it at the boy menacingly before pointed at herself and saying with a light and airy tone in her voice, “Novaque Refectus.” With a flash of yellow her dress dried and her hair was returned to its original state it was in before she had been so cruelly pushed into the pond. Her red gown was no longer covered in mud and the tear that had appeared in the back was repaired; she had never realized how nifty that spell was.
“Well, you don’t exactly follow the norm either,” Beatrix said flicking her green eyes on his tunic disapprovingly, though she wasn’t exactly a stickler for the rules, she disapproved of the Head Boy not wearing the correct uniform. Some example he was being. She put her wand away, feeling a little foolish that she hadn’t thought to cast that spell beforehand and save herself embarrassment.

Mael had been right about the Gryffindor not being too happy to see him. The look she flashed him was one of pure contempt, and though it should have sobered him, it rather amused him, as was shown by his unrepentant grin in her direction. He got an earful of her mutterings, of course, but he decided that, taking in present circumstances, it would be too much on the poor, pond-mucked girl to give her a detention, even if he was betting her face would go through about ten different shades of red and purple if he did. It wasn't often he allowed himself to miss out on things like that, so she was really lucky, in his opinion.
He knew that she was about two seconds away from hexing him, which only made his position more appealing. Should she try to hex him, not only would he get to award her detention for a week, but he could do so publicly (with every intention of making sure his bystanders knew how innocent he was). Unfortunately, she seemed to lose interest rather quickly. It was no fun when they did that which, of course, had led to his next comment. That, however, got her sufficiently riled, and with little effort on his part. Oh yes, he was good.
His hand got slapped away rather violently, although in reality it caused no harm to him. She pulled out her wand rather threateningly, but the only change in him this caused was the extension of his grin. "Now, now, Miss Mucky," he chided, "Let's not have our anger getting the better of us, now." Perhaps the "Miss Mucky" had been going a little too far, he reasoned - then again, she hadn't introduced herself. (He figured there was no need for him to introduce himself, since everyone knew who he was, anyway.)
He feigned a look of relief when the cleaning spell was performed, wondering why she hadn't done so earlier. It was very, very unlike Mael to wonder something and not ask it, but this was one of those rare times. He figured he had already pressed her a bit too far, and if he had the disfortune of being covered in pond muck without sufficient brainpower to remember to clean it up right away, he would be fairly explosive by this point...and indeed, she did look as much.
“Well, you don’t exactly follow the norm either,”
"No, I have to say I don't," he agreed, "But I really feel rather outdone, now. My silly simplistic color changes could in no way rival your own..." he paused for a necessary condescending silence "...decorative, shall we say, changes."
With that, he flashed her one of his ever-charming, ever-genuine, and ever-infurating grins.

Beatrix stared at the boy for a moment. She looked him slowly up and down with on eyebrow raised and malicious glint in her eye. Bea was no stranger to dealing with boys, and all she had to do was pick out what would irritate this boy the most. He was good looking, Slytherin, and Head Boy; bets were that he thought quite highly of himself, came from a privileged background and was most probably pureblood like herself. Her mind worked quickly to think of some form of verbal abuse she could hurl at him, but decided not to lower herself to such a low.
Silently she thanked her mother for not having any other children, specifically a boy. She could only imagine what having a brother would be like; like having miniature versions of her stuck-up father running around, acting like they own the place. She imagined that this boy was every inch a pureblood, and judging by the looks of it, he thought like one too. Then it crossed her mind that he might not actually know that she was pureblood too, and she almost chuckled out loud.
She was finally lifted from her reverie and she simply stared at him for a minute, not saying anything. She knew better than anyone that silence was far more unnerving than any sort of insult, even though sometimes it could cause a person to seem dippy. As she stood there looking at him with disdain it suddenly hit her; she realized what would infuriate him the most. Like most boys his age and of his situation; he probably expected to be known by almost everyone. Simple as that.
Beatrix gave a charming smile, almost mirroring the boy’s own, before saying in a faux-friendly voice, “And who, pray tell, are you? I don’t think I actually know who you are.”

As Beatrix looked at him with a particularly unfriendly glint in her eye, Mael returned her look with one of cheerfulness. Girls who never thought for themselves often tended to be highly boring and not at all good for teasing. He hated it when a girl burst into tears at the slightest comment or acted...well...girly. He rather liked the few exceptions to the rule, even if he despised them at the same time - like this one. She could definitely think for herself, from the looks of it, and yet he didn't exactly hold her in admiration, rather...annoyance mingled with amusement. Annusement, perhaps?
Of course, he knew from his parent's constant letters that they already had a whole line of "proper ladies" who seemingly had no goal in life other than to be married to him waiting at home. Of course, he did like to be admired, and he didn't see it as a bad aspiration in life for a girl, but he didn't think he could stand to live with them every day of his life. Then again, if the muck-covered, easily slighted Gryffindor alumni were at the other end of the spectrum...
“And who, pray tell, are you? I don’t think I actually know who you are.”
Oh, very nice. His grin never faltered, although his eyes twinkled with amusement. Even if she had been tromping slime and who knew what else all over the halls, at least she had a sense of humor.
"Well," he said cheerfully, "See this badge here?" He pointed to the badge pinned to his chest as if he were talking to a very small child. "It means that I'm the Head Boy - you might have seen a similar one around recently, as the Head Girl belongs to your house." His tone implied that he was imparting this crucial bit of information on her to save her from herself. He also felt like throwing in that he was the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team, but she had to know that, seeing as he had been since last year. For her to pretend like she hadn't known would merely make her seem ignorant. Therefore, he withheld that other bit of information, though his hazel eyes as good as boasted of his importance as he looked down at her. "And coincidentally, had you been paying attention at the start of term, you would have known my name."
He left it at that, because he certainly wasn't going to be bothered to give his name when he knew for a fact that she already knew it. And if she truly didn't, then he was glad he hadn't told her, anyhow. He was certain, however, that nobody could make it through more than a year at Hogwarts without knowing him, and that was only for the ones that were behind on the news. He purposely didn't ask for her name, deciding that if she had wanted to give it out, she could have. He wasn't going to pretend that it was important to him.
"So," he began curiously, knowing that by now she must be sick of him, "Do you always try and terrorize the younger years by rolling about at the bottom of the pond and romping through the hallways, or was this a one-time event? I daresay that Ravenclaw will never walk this corridor alone again."

"Well," he said cheerfully, "See this badge here?" He pointed to the badge pinned to his chest as if he were talking to a very small child. "It means that I'm the Head Boy - you might have seen a similar one around recently, as the Head Girl belongs to your house."
“Oh, know you’re Head Boy, I’m not thick, though you obviously think I am. As for the head girl, I know her by name, but I don’t actually know her, if you understand what I’m saying. Though I must say, I’m glad that one of our house got the top spot, even though she has to share responsibilities with a Slytherin,” Beatrix said calmly, putting great emphasis on the last word. She had never been anti-Slytherin before, but now she was, if a house could produce such an arrogant creature as the one standing in front of her, she doubt that she’d ever like the house. She’d seen Mael during a quidditch match once or twice, but it had never dawned on her that he was Quidditch captain, he looked more like follower than a leader.
Beatrix loved Quidditch, but she disliked watching the Hogwarts matches, they tended to lack the real talent which made professional matches so exciting. However, that’s not to say she never watched the Hogwarts matches, it’s just that she never paid attention to who was playing and what their positions where. She simply sat in the stands fiddling with her hair and not really paying much attention. Although she loved quidditch she had never thought to try out for the Gryffindor team. It always seemed to be a great hassle for her, and she’d rather not waste her free time learning how to fly around catching balls when she knew perfectly well that she would be able to with great ease.
However, there was also the reason that her father disliked seeing, or hearing for that matter, that his daughter flew around on a broomstick chasing after balls. He knew fully that her daughter had a passion for flying, but the thought of her being shunted by someone on the opposing team during a game made him put a firm foot down on the subject. He refused to give her his blessing if she was to try out for it, and though Beatrix hated her father she didn’t want to go ahead and play a sport if she didn’t have her father’s approval.
Bea was brought out of her reverie when Mael looked down on her with an imperious look an said, "And coincidentally, had you been paying attention at the start of term, you would have known my name."
Bea almost snapped, she was very willing to reach out and wring his neck for having mentioned that beginning of term. She had been at her cousin’s funeral the day that Hogwarts’ new term had started; her cousin had been killed by a thief who had tried to steal a precious ruby necklace which had been a Sheridan heirloom for centuries, he had used the Imperius Curse on her. Beatrix was fairly close to her cousin and often tried to forget that she had been killed, and every reference to the beginning of term merely brought back painful memories.
“Well, coincidentally, I was at my cousin’s funeral the first day of term, so I couldn’t possibly have been here to hear your name could I? Oh, and as I recall, you should have been warned of my late arrival by the headmaster. A warning so that you knew I had a reason to be walking around the castle at late hours. Oh, and it might have been a warning that you shouldn't bring this particular subject up with me!” Beatrix bit out, trying not cry, she hated showing weakness in front of these sort of boys, they’re the sort which enjoy tormenting younger years simply because they could do, and they could get away with it.
Beatrix knew for a fact that the Headmaster had told the prefects and Head Boy and Girl of her late arrival because upon returning to the school, she had been accosted by a Sixth Year Hufflepuff Prefect who told her that she had been informed of my ‘situation’, as she had delicately put it. Beatrix very nearly hexed the girl there and then, but Bea knew that it would not have been such a good idea seeing as it was only the beginning of term.
Also, back to the original subject of Mael's name, Bea didn’t know his name due to the simple fact that she didn’t really care who was Head Boy and Head Girl. The identity of these two senior students didn’t interest Bea at all. She was too busy studying and playing pranks on people to actually bother to learn who these people are; she thought of them only by their position, not by their names. That was the thing about Bea, if she hadn’t actually held a conversation with a person, she did not claim to know the person; sure, she had heard of them, but if she never actually spoken to them face to face she would refuse to say she knew them. To know someone, in her opinion, is too personal a term for Beatrix; it gives the impression that she had been acquainted with them for some time and was privy to facts and details that others were not. That little habit was just one of Bea’s little oddities.
"So," he began curiously, knowing that by now she must be sick of him, "Do you always try and terrorize the younger years by rolling about at the bottom of the pond and romping through the hallways, or was this a one-time event? I daresay that Ravenclaw will never walk this corridor alone again."
“You can consider this a one-time event. Unless of course you are planning to treat us all to a display of your own,” Beatrix said, before finally deciding that she had had enough of this irritating, stuck up boy, “I dare say, you’re really giving me too much attention. Teasing a girl so vindictively, and with such surprising vigor, might actually give people the impression that you like her. So I suggest you scurry along back to your snake pit before I start telling tales.”
With that she started down the corridor, not giving him the chance to reply. She had had just about enough of him, and the painful memory of her cousin’s memory caused her to shed a small tear. That painful reminder would stay with her all day, and Beatrix knew that when she got back to the Gryffindor dorm rooms, she’d cry her eyes out; she’d rather do that there instead of in front of this pompous seventh year.

"Oh, yes, poor Rhona," Mael agreed, rolling his eyes and continuing in a dramatic tone, "How could she possibly be put through the horror of sharing responsibilities with me?"
Mael didn't like the Head Girl in any way, really, but he did know that if there was one thing she shouldn't get, it was pity. She had absolutely no trouble rising to the occasion when it came to arguments and debates, and even though it pained him to admit it, he held her in respect. She was a very capable girl, and she was in no way in need of the pity of her fellow housemates. Though she would probably enjoy creating an entire force of uppish, snappy Gryffindor girls to assult him every time he roamed the hallways looking for a bit of fun.
“Well, coincidentally, I was at my cousin’s funeral the first day of term, so I couldn’t possibly have been here to hear your name could I? Oh, and it might have been a warning that you shouldn't bring this particular subject up with me!”
"Oh, sweet mother of Merlin!" Mael snapped, now annoyed beyond the joking point. Of course he remembered the start of term and what they had been told, but it wasn't he that seemed weak in the area of attention deficeits. "Miss Sheridan," he addressed cordially, his tone clipped, "It seems that today, memory is not your strongpoint. Had it been, you would have realized that during this entire conversation, you have never introduced yourself to me. Unless you considered me to go beyond the norm in intelligence as well as clothing, you would know that there is no possible way I could know who you were, or had any reason to assume that you were not with nearly everyone else at the start of term. I was given your name and an account of your situation, I admit, but I was never introduced or given a physical description, therefore I had no way of knowing that you were that student." By this time, he had calmed down considerably, and was speaking in a normal tone of voice. Great Merlin, he saw tears watering in those eyes. Why was it that girls were talked of as being so perceptive, when all they ever seemed to do was upset themselves and the people around them?
Mael did enjoy teasing people whom he saw as easy to get to, but he would never have sunk so low as to bring up a recently dead cousin. Well, perhaps if he really hated the person, but honestly. This Gryffindor was about one step away from receiving a week's worth of detention for sheer stupidity. No doubt, though, that wasn't one of the "acceptable" reasons to give a detention listed in the rulebook. He would have to read up on that tonight and see if it was possible.
“You can consider this a one-time event. Unless of course you are planning to treat us all to a display of your own,”
He managed to laugh at that. "No thanks, I'd much rather leave that to you," he replied amusedly. There would be a field day at Hogwarts if he were to tromp around covered in grime.
“I dare say, you’re really giving me too much attention. Teasing a girl so vindictively, and with such surprising vigor, might actually give people the impression that you like her. So I suggest you scurry along back to your snake pit before I start telling tales.”
She stalked off then, giving him no chance to reply, but he couldn't have even if he had wanted to - he was busy laughing. The thought of her trying to spread rumors that he liked her was simply too hilarious. Everyone who even remotely knew Mael knew that he teased everyone he came upon, and that the thought of him liking a sixth year Gryffindor - particularly that sixth year Gryffindor - were laughable. He rather hoped that she did try and spread "tales", as she put it, for then he would get all the more fun out of this event - some of it, you see, had been slightly ruined by the fact that he was worried she would start pouring out the tears at any moment.
He watched as she disappeared around the corner, and he knew what he was going to have to do. No doubt wind of this encounter would spread through the school like wildfire. Rhona or some other saintly student would insist that he had not acted responsibly, and thus he would get the blame for it, even though it was the girl's own fault that her cousin or the start of term ever had to be mentioned, in Mael's eyes. She would be receiving an officially sealed letter soon, but not for a detention. It would have to be some professional-sounding apology on his part for bringing up a delicate subject, assuring her it was an accident, yada yada yada.
He yawned as he turned to continue down the hall, his wand out as he cleaned up the traces of her mess while at the same time casting air-freshening charms to remove the scent of whatever the disgusting stuff that was pasted all over her had been. He hated writing apologies, and he rarely meant them, but he knew it would be necessary, and, as many would put it the "right" thing to do. He wasn't all too sure about that, seeing as he thought he should receive an apology, as well. All the same, he knew he would never receive one, and he would have to content himself with simply annoying her from that point forward.
